I found a reference in UK RED to a work by Philip Waller that G. K. Chesteron had been reading Chambers’s Encyclopaedia. Chesterton wrote that he didn’t really need the illustrations of the new edition. And that reading volumes of Chambers’s Encyclopaedia must be “the sort of pleasure a cow must have after grazing all day long.”
