I came across this post by Dr Bethan Stevens (from the University of Sussex) about different audience experience in the 19th Century being different if they read a work in parts or if they read it as a volume. Even their experience of the illustrations would have been different. I thought it was pretty interesting, and she even mentions wood engravers Dalziel Brothers and W. T. Green.
