Some data on the Chambers's wood engravings
On Monday 18 November, I had a brief meeting with Paul and Rob. Among the things I discussed with them were the results of some data I collected. These are the wood engraved images per volume in different editions of Chambers' encyclopaedia:
Edition 1 Edition 2
Volume 1 370 307
Volume 2 370 397
Volume 3 508 319
Volume 4 351 347
Volume 5 325 369
Volume 6 408 283
Volume 7 359 261
Volume 8 513 314
Volume 9 454 343
Volume 10 408 316
Total images 4066 3256
As you can see from the table, there are fewer engraved images in the second edition in comparison with the first edition. However, there do seem to be many more tables. The next steps for me are to compare the of tables in both editions in a similar way that I've done for the wood engravings. It seems that there was a shift going on in the presentation of information. I also intend to start categorizing some of the types of engravings, for instance: botanical, human figures, anatomical and see if this has also shifted. At initial glance there seem to be more machines or vehicles depicted in the second edition.
