Prior to the start of registration, and in the week prior to the meeting, I visited Chetham’s Library in Manchester, which holds the original first and second editions of Chambers’ Encyclopaedias. I spent about 9 hours over a couple of visits reviewing the books and taking notes and photos for different sections, comparing the two versions, and also has been doing some background reading on W & R Chambers and compiling a list of Encyclopaedias published in Europe between the 18th – early 20th centuries that may have influenced the development of Chambers’s Encyclopaedias or that were influenced by Chambers’s first two editions. I created several documents, including a presentation and a timeline that I showed the supervisors on initial findings for the differences between the books. The meeting was informal and supervisors made comments as they went through the documents. I was told that I had made a good start and was advised to add some specific encyclopaedias to her timeline and then to follow up on the writings of them and some dictionaries:

The Encyclopaedia Metropolitana (1817) Imperial Dictionary Edinburgh Encyclopaedia (1830) Century Dictionary

I was also advised to take a wood engraving course to understand the process of creating the blocks.

Alison mentioned that a volunteer had recently scanned the woodblocks for the 1st edition and that she would post them to me. Sondra Miley Cooney was also mentioned as a contact and Alison said that she would put me in touch with her.
